B1821 BH Hex Screws
Grade BD Hex Cap Screws are made from medium carbon steel and heat-treated. They have a greater tensile strength than a Grade-5 screw and are designed for use in high stress applications.
A354 Grade BD is also a commonly referenced high strength fastener standard with almost identical chemical and mechanical properties to the Grade 8. The main difference between the two is that A354 Grade BD covers threads from 1/4” thru to 4” and has higher allowable Phosphorus and Sulfur contents.
ASME B18.2.1 is a standard developed by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) that specifies the requirements for various types of bolts, including those classified as "BH" compliant. The "BH" designation refers to a specific type of hex head bolt that meets certain dimensional and performance criteria outlined in the standard.
Key Features of ASME B18.2.1 BH Compliant Bolts:
Design and Dimensions
- BH compliant bolts are characterized by their hexagonal heads, which provide a larger surface area for wrenching and facilitate easier installation and removal.
- The standard specifies precise dimensions for the head, shank, and thread length, ensuring compatibility with various applications and fasteners.
Material Specifications
- These bolts are typically made from high-strength materials, such as carbon steel or alloy steel, which may be heat-treated to enhance their mechanical properties.
- The standard may also specify requirements for corrosion resistance, depending on the intended application.
Threading
- ASME B18.2.1 outlines the thread specifications, including the type (UNC, UNF, etc.), pitch, and tolerance levels, ensuring that the bolts can be used with corresponding nuts and tapped holes.
Mechanical Properties
- The standard defines the mechanical properties that BH compliant bolts must meet, including yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation. These properties ensure that the bolts can withstand the loads and stresses encountered in their applications.
Finish and Coating
- BH compliant bolts may be available with various surface finishes, such as zinc plating, black oxide, or other coatings that enhance corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal.
Applications
- These bolts are commonly used in construction, machinery, automotive, and other industrial applications where reliable fastening is critical.
Quality Assurance
- Compliance with ASME B18.2.1 ensures that the bolts have been manufactured to meet rigorous quality standards, which may include testing for strength, hardness, and other mechanical properties. The US Military and NATO have adopted the ASME standards for mechanical fasteners as the quality assurance methods meets military standards (mil-std) and military specifications (mil-spec).
ASME B18.2.1 BH compliant bolts are essential components in many engineering and construction applications, providing reliable fastening solutions. Their adherence to standardized dimensions, material properties, and quality assurance measures makes them a preferred choice for engineers and manufacturers seeking dependable performance in their projects.
