Obturator Spindle
The M777 howitzer uses an obturator spindle as part of its breech mechanism to seal the chamber and prevent gas leaks during firing. This spindle is a critical component for maintaining pressure within the gun's chamber. The obturator spindle, along with the obturator pad, ensures a tight seal between the breechblock and the cannon tube.
Upgraded design with FortiPhy XVD surface finish replacing the original Chromium Plating.
The M777's obturator spindle design was upgraded with a new surface finish in 2017 to this NSN replacing the original NSN 1025-01-527-8505 to reduce issues with chromium plating corrosion which led to premature replacement.
