Obturator Spindle

The M777 howitzer uses an obturator spindle as part of its breech mechanism to seal the chamber and prevent gas leaks during firing. This spindle is a critical component for maintaining pressure within the gun's chamber. The obturator spindle, along with the obturator pad, ensures a tight seal between the breechblock and the cannon tube. 

Original design with Chromium Plating.

The M777's obturator spindle design was upgraded with a new plating process in 2017 to NSN 1025-01-648-8068 to reduce issues with chromium plating corrosion which led to premature replacement.
