This adaptor provides a Female NPT (National Pipe Thread) threaded connection for a hose going from the engine to the inlet of the remote oil filter and a Female NPT for connection of a hose from the outlet of the remote oil filter returning oil to the engine. Provision is made for a simple sprung-loaded non-metallic disc filter bypass valve which operates when the differential pressure across the oil filter is elevated (when the oil filter is clogged or a hose is restricted). This emergency bypass valve prevents a remote oil filter failure from starving the engine of lubricating oil. The valve components are sold separately and must be fitted for correct operation.
Common Failure - Hose Thread Splitting/Cracking
The most common failure of this part is over-tightening of the hose connection threads into this adaptor. The adaptor is made of cast aluminum and the boss containing each female thread is very much weaker than the forces generated by tightening the tapered pipe thread for the hose connections. This causes the boss to fracture leaving a crack across the thread which can be easily un-noticeable to a mechanic. When the engine is started, oil immediately streams out of the crack in a high volume high pressure oil leak. The design and material of this adaptor do not allow a sufficient repair to be made and so this part must be replaced if cracked.
